The shepherds would even perform brain surgery on sheep suffering from coenurosis (otherwise known as gid or sturdy), to remove the tapeworm (Coenurus cerebralis) that caused the animals to go mad, and eventually to die if left untreated.
An excerpt from a previous interview. Sándor says: They say the worm gets into the brain through the nose, perhaps its something to do with the larva of a fly. Draining the skull had to done with great precision or the animal would die. But if you managed to get the worm out, the symptoms would disappear immediately. No vets today, or even back then, would perform an operation like that. The vet would just have the animal slaughtered, but the shepherds were reluctant to kill an animal.
Some researchers believe that the skull-boring technique used by the shepherds was handed down from the first Magyar settlers in the Carpathian basin.

A pásztorok a kergekórban szenvedő birkán koponyaműtétet is végrehajtottak, melynek során eltávolították a kergeséget okozó férget.
A pásztor viszont sajnálta volna levágni"
